Little River Canine is located in the beautiful rural community of North Florida.  We train, raise, and breed German Shepherd dogs  from working bloodlines.

We breed for dogs that will live in the home as a companion dog and can also function as a working dog. Our german shepherds are not kennel dogs.

Each litter is planned with the goal of holding at least one dog back for our breeding program and our own enjoyment.   Our personal dogs are trained in personal
protection and obedience.  We enjoy training for Rally and plan on trying herding in the next year.

Dogs from our breeding program are being trained in Schutzhund, Personal Protection, Agility and herding.

Join us at LEERBURG on the discussion forums for alot of information on training, nutrition, all types of dog sports, and just about anything else you can imagine when it comes to dogs!  I have been a contributing member for many years, and am a well respected member. Come take a look, and you won’t be dissappointed!

Thank you for visiting our site.  If I can answer any questions please use the form, I will respond as soon as I can.               Betty Mathena

Reccomendations:

I would like to offer my unconditional recommendation for Betty Waldron Mathena  and the dogs that she breeds through her kennel, Little River Canine.I have known Betty for over ten years and trained alongside her at both SchH clubs and advanced training seminars in those many years. I have watched her grow into a knowledgeable and skilled handler/ trainer and seen the dedication and hard work that she has put into her top-notch breeding program.

Betty has carefully studied the art of breeding and her knowledge of pedigrees and dog genetics is impressive, to say the least. I have been lucky enough to have procured a dog from her, which has been the best combination of drive and brains that I’ve ever been fortunate enough to own, and given my history as one of this country’s top-rated PPD trainer and vendor, that is saying something.
A litter of Betty’s puppies can stand up to the best that our Country can offer, and I consider her one of the top breeders of working dogs that I’ve ever met.

But more importantly, I’d like to take a moment and talk about Betty’s real strength – her strict ethics and strong desire to make her customers happy. Betty goes so far out of her way to make things right for a puppy buyer that I can say with no exaggeration that she literally sets the industry standard – *no one* in the world of working German Shepherds today spends as much time preparing a puppy with good socialization and habits as Betty does. Every puppy from Betty is treated like she was going to make it her own, and you just don’t see that level of commitment from breeders today.

My own competition / personal protection dog ( a dog that is famous nationally for his drive and pure work ethic ) has been used to strengthen Betty’s breeding lines, and I say that with pride – it was an honor to make a contribution to Betty’s kennel!

Betty provides lifetime advice for her puppy buyers, along with going the extra mile to provide whatever service a prospective puppy buyer could ask for, and I know that first hand.

I would be glad to discuss anything “Betty” or Little River Canine related at anytime, I can be contacted via PM on the Leerburg.com forum ( and if you need any further information about Betty or her kennel, you could spend some time at the forum, which is the largest working dog forum in our country, and see what high regard Betty is held there! )

 From John:

Hi,  I’m John L Lockett, Master Trainer and Owner of K9-Perfection.

When Betty told me about her GSD breeding program and ask me to be her director of training, I was less than enthusiastic. Thinking ok do I want to take on other mediocre GSD breeding program and try to make it look like the real deal. See I’m a old school Shepherd man, that believes a German Shepherd should be the embodiment of “power, courage, intelligence, loyalty,” and  not to mention a sight for sore eyes when it comes to beauty.

So I told Betty I’d take a look at her dogs and design a training program for her to find a trainer to follow….thinking I would be less than impressed and unwilling to make a weekly 4hr. trip to train them myself. LMAO well 3yrs. and over 100 sessions later I’m very proud to say after that first session, I become her director of training and she is one of only two GSD kennels in the U.S. I will broker for.

Betty has one of the finest family protection and companion dog programs in the United States.
Thank you

FROM WENDY

Betty and I first met back in 2005 when we were both just getting interested in Schutzhund.  We realized we only lived a couple miles apart and began doing lots of training together.  Over the years we’ve continued training in a variety of disciplines, and while doing so I’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of her dogs.  They are some of the best GSD I’ve encountered, and I have seen many!  I teasingly tell Betty her dogs are really Malinois in GSD coats because they have the drives I’m accustomed to seeing in Mals;  an intense work ethic; rock solid nerves and the physical attributes needed to excel in any venue!

She knows I love my Malinois, but I have no problem recommending her breedings to anyone, and have done so many times in the years we’ve known each other.  I will certainly continue to do so in the future.
